Looking for beautiful art inspired by a legendary painter?
Jackson Pollock was one of the most prominent American Post-War artists and a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism. He was known for his 'drip paintings', which he created by pouring and hurling paint at the canvas in an attempt to create roiling vortexes of colour and line.
Born Paul Jackson Pollock on January 28, 1912, in Cody, Wyoming, he moved with his family nine times throughout the Western United States during his early childhood and was exposed to various art forms from different cultures, such as Navajo sand painting and Asian calligraphy. He began to become interested in symbolism and Native American art.
He studied with Thomas Hart Benton in New York and then under the radical Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros. This experience helped him to develop his style which gradually evolved from a dark form of regionalism to an abstract expressionist style.
From the mid-1940s onward, he produced an extensive series of drip paintings, which had an effect similar to that of molecular waves. They are self-reflexive in their nature and readily inspire larger interpretations.
They are also very striking in that they feature vigorous and spontaneous movement through seemingly chaotic marks. The technique may look as though the artist simply stepped back and threw paint at the canvas, but each movement of the can or brush was done with purpose.
Pollock's work has also been described as a manifestation of his psyche, which he believed to be full of anger, confusion and frustration. It reflects his own personal revelations from his Jungian psychotherapy sessions, and it is evident that his subconscious was at the center of his artistic process.
